Líderes Boricuas en Ciencias Agrícoloas

The Líderes Boricuas en Ciencias Agrícolas (LIBCA) program is a one-year leadership and professional development initiative designed to support students pursuing a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus. The program focuses on building leadership capacity, enhancing career development, and providing students with the tools and experiences necessary to excel in the agricultural sector. LIBCA offers workshops, industry exposure, and networking opportunities with professionals in agriculture, with an emphasis on preparing students for leadership roles in both academia and industry. Through strategic partnerships with UPR Mayagüez and industry leaders, LIBCA aims to foster a new generation of Puerto Rican agricultural professionals who are equipped to address the challenges of sustainable agriculture and food systems.
My role and impact
As Co-Director of Líderes Boricuas en Ciencias Agrícolas (LIBCA), I co-developed and managed this one-year leadership and professional development program at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez. I played a key role in shaping the program’s vision, strategic goals, and structure to align with the leadership and career development needs of agricultural sciences students. My responsibilities included overseeing student admissions, coordinating workshops, and fostering institutional collaborations with UPR Mayagüez and industry stakeholders. I also organized and co-hosted professional development events, inviting industry experts to provide mentorship and career guidance. Additionally, I worked on securing program sustainability by engaging donors and strengthening industry partnerships. Through LIBCA, I helped equip students with critical leadership skills, mentorship, and career development tools, significantly enhancing their professional growth. Participants benefited from targeted workshops, hands-on learning experiences, and direct exposure to industry professionals, including site visits such as the Corteva Agriscience facility tour. The program empowered students with career clarity, expanded professional networks, and the confidence to pursue leadership roles in both academia and the agricultural sector.
